West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito itself becomes infected when it feeds on the blood of a bird carrying the virus. After about 2 weeks, the mosquito is able to transmit the virus to humans and animals that it bites for food. The virus is not transmitted from person to person, nor can it be contracted directly from an infected animal such as a bird, horse or pet.
