Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis is an infectious, non-contagious disease caused by a bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted by ticks.

The disease is sometimes difficult to diagnose because tick bites are not always visible and the symptoms are similar to those of other diseases such as the flu.

Lyme disease is usually effectively treated with antibiotics. If not treated promptly, the disease can affect the joints and nervous system.

Prevention of Lyme disease includes protection from tick bites, prompt but careful removal of ticks after the bite, and the possible prescription of antibiotics as a prophylaxis, i.e., without waiting for symptoms to appear.

When walking in the forest, it is recommended to wear long, closed protective clothing (pants, long-sleeved shirts, hats), and to use skin repellents. Ticks that are not yet attached to the skin can be more easily spotted on people wearing light-colored clothing.
